Location of the Friedenstein barracks in Thuringia

The Friedenstein barracks in Gotha is located on the south-eastern outskirts of a barracks site that has grown over time. A hospital is attached to it .

The construction work on the barracks began in 1934, the handover of the barracks to the "Fliegergruppe Gotha" took place in 1935. On April 1, 1936, it became the I. Group of Kampfgeschwader 253. This in turn became I. Gruppe / Kampfgeschwader on May 1, 1939 4 renamed.

From 1956 to 1990 it housed the 4 Panzer Regiment (PR-4) " August Bebel " and the repair battalion 4 (IB-4) " Wilhelm Leuschner " of the National People's Army. The regiment belonged to the 4th Motorized Rifle Division (4th MSD) of the National People's Army (NVA). After the NVA was dissolved in 1990, the barracks were taken over by the Bundeswehr . The name was changed to "Friedenstein-Kaserne" in 1992 and refers to the Friedenstein Castle . From 1992 the establishment of the Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion 13 took place, this was converted into the Reconnaissance Battalion 13 in 2007 as part of a reform .
