Friedrich Adam Aries

Friedrich Adam Widder (also: Frederick Adam Widder ; born January 15, 1724 in Oppenheim , † February 26, 1784 in Groningen ) was a German mathematician .

Life

His father was Johann Philipp Widder, at that time the rector of the Latin school in Oppenheim and later a councilor of the Electoral Palatinate as well as the chief pastor of the Reformed congregation in Mannheim. Friedrich Adam Widder studied at the University of Heidelberg in 1740 and at the University of Groningen in 1744 . In 1751 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in Groningen and held philosophical lectures there from 1752. On April 22, 1767, he was appointed associate professor of philosophy, and when he took office, he gave the speech oratie de sapientia Dei in minimis naturae operibus conspicua .

On December 22, 1773 he was appointed full professor of philosophy and mathematics and in this capacity had taken over the rectorate of the alma mater in 1778, which he resigned in 1779 with the speech de praecipuis in consequendo erruditione solidiore impedimentis philosophiae studio superandis . Widder was an extraordinary member of the Electoral Palatinate Academy of Sciences . With the publication of Engelhard's handbook Compendium phil. pract. made a name. In 1784 he died of a hemorrhage.
