Friedrich Georg Weitsch
Friedrich Georg Weitsch (born August 8, 1758 in Braunschweig , † May 30, 1828 in Berlin ) was a German painter and etcher .
Life
He began his training as a painter with his father Pascha Johann Friedrich Weitsch and continued this from 1776 with HW Tischbein in Kassel . A job at the Braunschweig lacquerware manufacturer Stobwasser was followed by a continuation of training at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1783 . There was Lambert Krahe his teacher.
Brunswick court painter
Weitsch stayed in Amsterdam and Italy from 1784 to 1787, where he visited Rome, Naples and Florence, among others, and was appointed court painter to Brunswick by Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand on his return . On behalf of the duke he made copies of portraits in the picture gallery Schloss Salzdahlum and portrayed members of the ducal family, the court preacher abbot Jerusalem and his father.
Academy Rector and Royal Court Painter in Berlin
Weitsch became a member of the Berlin Art Academy in 1794 and took up residence in Berlin in 1795. As the successor to Bernhard Rode , who died in 1797 , he taught history painting at the academy and was rector of the institution in 1798. In the same year he was appointed royal court painter.
Weitsch died in Berlin in 1828. He was married to Christiane Elisabeth Schröder since 1794. The marriage remained childless.
Works
His work includes depictions of landscapes, historical and religious subjects, but above all portraits of princely and bourgeois clients. Weitsch's portrait art is influenced by Anton Graff . Works by Weitsch are owned by the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig , the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum and the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum .
