Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen (historian)

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Karl August Bernhard Alexander Baron Hiller von Gaertringen (born January 15, 1923 in Stuttgart ; † October 25, 1999 ) was a German historian who worked, among other things, as editor at the Military History Research Office .

Life

Hiller von Gaertringen came from a noble family from Württemberg. He was born as the son of an officer who was in the Uhlan regiment "King Wilhelm I." (2. Württembergisches) No. 20 served, born; his maternal grandfather was the royal Prussian senior administrative judge and DNVP politician Kuno Graf von Westarp . Hiller von Gaertringen was co- lord of Gärtringen and Ditzingen and last served as first lieutenant in the Wehrmacht .

After World War II , he studied history and was in 1955 when Hans Rothfels at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tübingen with a dissertation to history and criticism of the Memoirs of Prince Bulow to Dr. phil. PhD. Then he was an assistant at the history seminar. Hiller von Gaertringen was u. a. Editor of the memoirs of Reichswehr Minister Wilhelm Groener and author of several DBE and NDB articles. His research on the stab in the back is considered significant; for this he published u. a. in From Politics and Contemporary History . A special focus of interest was research on the resistance to National Socialism, here u. a. Editing and commenting on Ulrich von Hassell's diaries.

From 1977 to 1988 he was a historian and editor at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau.
