Friedrich Ohlenschlager (born on August 2, 1840 in Niedernberg ; died on December 14, 1916 in Munich ) was a German classical philologist , prehistoric and provincial Roman archaeologist as well as high school professor and rector.

Career

Friedrich Ohlenschlager attended the humanistic grammar school in Frankfurt am Main and then studied classical philology at the University of Munich . From 1864 he was employed as an assistant teacher at the college in Eichstätt , where he became a study teacher at the Latin school in 1869.

For the school year 1870/1871 he was transferred to the Maximiliansgymnasium in Munich, which at the time was under the direction of Anton Linsmayer . In 1887 Friedrich Ohlenschlager was appointed rector of the university in Speyer , which he headed until 1898, when he finally became rector of the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich, a position that he held until his retirement in 1909.

Scientific work

As early as 1869 in Eichstätt, Friedrich Ohlenschlager began his studies of Bavaria's history in prehistoric and Roman times. Initially limited to local research, he continuously expanded his research area and eventually covered the whole of Bavaria. He made contact with numerous local researchers and those interested in antiquity, collected printed and handwritten messages about finds and organized the material obtained in this way. In order to obtain comparability and an overview, he began to map finds. At the sixth general meeting of the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory in Munich in 1875, he presented his concept and emphasized the need to create a map of the whole of Bavaria. In the same year he published the first part of his directory of the sites for the prehistoric map of Bavaria, covering the area south of the Danube. From 1879 the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory published the map material developed by Ohlenschlager. By 1890, 15 of his maps at a scale of 1: 25,000 had been printed. Ohlenschlager had expired the entire Limes in Bavaria during the summer holidays of 1875, 1879, 1880 and 1886.

He commented on numerous sites and questions, especially those of Roman provincial archeology, in the context of articles. In 1884 he published a comprehensive literature review on the research complex relating to Bavaria. Because of his achievements in this field, he was elected an extraordinary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1883 . In 1887 he published a study on the Roman border marks, the Limes in Bavaria, in their treatises .

His knowledge in the field of Limes research meant that he was appointed a member of the Imperial Limes Commission in 1892 when it was founded. On May 20, 1897, he was from the University of Heidelberg , the honorary doctorate awarded. In addition, he was appointed Knight IV Class of the Order of St. Michael .
