Friedrich Traugott Kützing (born December 8, 1807 in Ritteburg , † September 9, 1893 in Nordhausen ) was a German botanist and algae researcher. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Kütz. "

Live and act

After initially working as a pharmacist, Kützing studied natural sciences in Halle, made a botanical trip to the littoral, Dalmatia, Italy and the Alps and in 1838 became a natural science teacher at the secondary school in Nordhausen. In 1843 he was appointed professor and retired in 1883. In 1842 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

A new epoch was established for special algae science through Kützing's work. His work "Species algarum" (Leipz. 1849) contains all the species known at the time. He also wrote: “Synopsis Diatomearum” (Halle 1833); “Tabulae phycologicae” (Nordhausen 1845–1870, 20 vols. With 2000 colored plates); "Phycologia generalis, or anatomy, physiology and systems science of the Tange" (Leipzig 1843, with 80 colored plates); "The pebble-shell bacillaries or diatoms" (Nordhausen 1844, with 30 plates; 2nd copy 1865); "Phycologia germanica" (Nordhausen 1845). K. also published the “Algae aquae dulcis” (Halle 1833–1836, Issue 1–16) in dried copies and also wrote: “The natural sciences in schools as promoters of Christian humanism” (Nordhausen 1850) and “Basics of the philosophical Botany ”(Leipzig 1851–1852, 2 volumes).

In the latter work he appeared as a defender of spontaneous generation and fought against the hypothesis of the stability of species.

Kützing also worked with yeast . In 1837 , he was one of the first scientists to prove the importance of yeast in alcoholic fermentation independently of Charles Cagniard-Latour and Theodor Schwann .

Honors

The algae genera Kuetzingia Sonder , Kuetzingiella Kornmann and Kuetzingina Kuntze have been named after him.
