Friedrich Wielandt

Friedrich Wielandt (born September 7, 1906 in Heidelberg , † March 18, 1996 in Karlsruhe - Grötzingen ) was a German numismatist . From 1936 to 1971 he was head of the Badischer Münzkabinett in Karlsruhe and published numerous works.

Life

He was the son of the Baden government architect Karl Julius Wielandt (1873-1946) and attended high school in Freiburg im Breisgau . There and in Munich he studied history and German. In 1930 he did his doctorate on Margrave Christoph I and the territory of Baden. Through Heinrich Finke , Wielandt came into contact with Konrad Beyerle , under whose direction he worked on an edition of the Konstanz city ​​law. In addition, during his research in the Konstanz city archive, he was preparing a work on the Konstanz linen trade. After Beyerle's death in 1933 and the beginning of National Socialism, Wielandt, deprived of his hopes for a job as a city archivist in Konstanz, decided to pursue further studies and passed the state examination for a higher teaching post. He then worked for a short time as a volunteer at the university library in Freiburg before joining the Badische Münzkabinett , headed by Otto Konrad Roller , as a research assistant , which he took over after Roller 's death in 1936 and the annexation of the Münzkabinett to the Badisches Landesmuseum . In the Second World War Wielandt was drafted into the military and seriously wounded near Demyansk , so that he spent several months in the hospital in 1942/43. He could no longer accept an offer for a teaching position in numismatics at the University of Strasbourg because of the war. After the end of the war, Wielandt was initially relieved of his previous duties by the military government, but was reinstated as head of the coin cabinet in 1948. In 1957 he became chief curator. In 1967 he received the title of professor. In 1971 he retired.

He was married to the daughter of a manufacturer from Karlsruhe, Dorothée Arzt.

Friedrich Wielandt has published numerous numismatic and historical writings since the end of his studies. One of his main works, written in 1942/43 in military hospitals and published in 1951, is dedicated to the Breisgauer Pfennig and its mints . In 1955 Wielandt published a standard work on the history of coins in Baden: The history of coins and money in Baden . Between 1959 and 1978 Wielandt published other standard works on the history of coins in various Swiss cantons. He has also written countless essays in compilations.
