Friedrich Wilhelm Semmler (born May 11, 1860 in Hochzeit , Arnswalde district , † March 15, 1931 in Ramin ) was a German chemist and politician (DNVP).

Life

Friedrich Wilhelm Semmler was born the son of a landowner. After attending the community school in Woldenberg , Friedeberg district in the Neumark , and the grammar school in Landsberg , Semmler studied chemistry from 1880 to 1886 at the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg and the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelms University of Breslau . In 1881 he became a member (later honorary member) of the Corps Silesia Breslau .

1887 doctorate Semmler in Wroclaw for Dr. phil. In 1890 the habilitation followed in Greifswald . Semmler married in 1888. On July 1, 1896, Semmler became a professor at the University of Greifswald . There he received an associate's post in 1901 . In 1902 he became a corps bow bearer of Borussia Greifswald . On September 30, 1904, he was appointed full honorary professor. After two years in Berlin as an employee of Emil Fischer from 1907 to 1909, Semmler became full professor for organic chemistry at the TH Breslau in 1909 . On August 15, 1913, he received the title of Geh. Governing Council awarded. He inherited the Ramin estate in the Randow district in Pomerania from his parents .

During the First World War , Semmler sat on the war committee for substitute feed in Berlin and Breslau from 1916 to 1919.

After the war, Semmler became a member of the German National People's Party (DNVP). In January 1919 he was elected to the Weimar National Assembly for constituency 9 (Breslau) , of which he was a member until the first Reichstag of the Republic met in June 1920. In the Reichstag Semmler was present from June 1920 to May 1924 as a member of the constituency 8 (Breslau). In December 1924 he was elected to the Prussian state parliament, to which he belonged until 1931.

research

As a researcher Semmler dealt with the essential oils , z. B. the terpenes , and discovered the importance of unsaturated bonds for this class of substances. He was the first to describe the chemical structures of numerous compounds such as citral , citronellal , geraniol , etc. The Semmer rearrangement and the Semmlian oxime rearrangement are also associated with his name . Semmler published the results of his research mainly in articles in the reports of the German Chemical Society and in presentations in various daily newspapers.
