Fritz Wintersteller
Fritz Wintersteller (born October 21, 1927 in Innsbruck ; † September 15, 2018 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian mountaineer who made the first ascent of Broad Peak in 1957 together with Hermann Buhl , Kurt Diemberger and Marcus Schmuck (expedition leader).
Fritz Wintersteller never made mountaineering and his beloved mountains a profession or pursued financial interests with it. He had to give up climbing at the highest level of difficulty early after a broken leg that healed poorly. Fritz Wintersteller later climbed all 4,000 m high mountains in the Alps apart from three secondary peaks. Fritz Wintersteller was awarded the Golden Sports Badge of the Republic of Austria and on February 23, 2006 he was made an honorary citizen of his hometown Salzburg .
