Fukuda Takeo ( Japanese 福田 赳 夫 ; born January 14, 1905 in Gunma Prefecture ; † July 5, 1995 ) was a Japanese politician of the LDP and the 42nd Prime Minister of Japan .

After attending the Imperial University of Tokyo , Fukuda Takeo worked as an official in the Treasury and cabinet minister during World War II . After the war, he headed the Supreme Audit Office of Japan.

In 1952, Fukuda was elected to the Japanese House of Representatives as a deputy for the third district of Gunmas . In 1957 he was elected party secretary of the LDP and successively held the positions of Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (1959–1969), Minister of Finance (1969–1971), Minister of Foreign Affairs (1971–1973) and Director of the Japanese Economic Planning Agency ( 1974-1976).

In a first candidacy for the office of party chairman in 1972, he failed because of Kakuei Tanaka (see also " Kaku-Fuku War "). After the election failure, Fukuda took over the chairmanship of the LDP and the office of Prime Minister from Takeo Miki in 1976 . In order to limit the power of factions within the LDP, Fukuda first introduced primary elections for the party chairmanship, in which he was defeated by Ōhira Masayoshi in 1978 , after which he had to resign as prime minister. From 1979 to 1986 he was the chairman of the LDP faction Seiwa Seisaku Kenkyūkai .

In 1983 Fukuda founded the InterAction Council with Jimmy Carter and retired from politics in 1990.
