Fukushima ([ ɸɯ̥ˈkɯɕima ], dt. “ Lucky Island”, Japanese 福島 市 , Fukushima- shi , “[independent] city of Fukushima”) is a Japanese city and the administrative seat of the prefecture of the same name in the northeast of the main island Honshū .
The name Fukushima has been known around the world since March 11, 2011 due to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima , which occurred about 60 kilometers southeast of the city in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant , whereby the city of Fukushima was hardly affected.
geography
Fukushima is a big city 50 km inland and about 250 kilometers north of the state capital Tokyo .
It extends over a length of 30 kilometers along the Abukuma River within the southern Fukushima Basin ( 福島 盆地 , Fukushima-bonchi ). The Ōu Mountains extend to the west and north of the administrative area and the Abukuma highlands to the east .
history
Fukushima Castle (originally called Daibutsu) was built in the 15th century as a base and supply station for the Date . Initially a border castle of Aizu, it became the prince seat of the independent Han Fukushima in the Edo period . The castle town ( jōkamachi ) Fukushima grew around the castle . In the Boshin War at the start of the Meiji Restoration , the Fukushima-han fought as part of the Northern Alliance against the new government led by Chōshū and Satsuma , but the decisive battles had already been fought, and Fukushima Castle fell to the Restoration Army without a fight. With the abolition of the Han , the han Fukushima became the first prefecture ( ken ) Fukushima not yet corresponding to the present day . This became part of Nihonmatsu, together with a number of other former Han / prefectures, which was renamed (again) to Fukushima after a short time with the relocation of the prefectural administration to the castle town of Fukushima. The Fukushima Prefectural Administration building is still located on the site of the former castle.
The independent city (-shi) Fukushima was founded on April 1st, 1907 through the conversion of the city of Fukushima ( 福島 町 ) from Shinobu County, which had previously been merged with parts of other villages. Fukushima had a population of 285,035 as of April 1, 2020 and is the third largest city in the prefecture.
