Funeralium is a French funeral doom band founded in 2003 by Jonathan “Marquis” Théry . The band name is a suitcase word formed from the terms Funeral ( English burial ) and Valium .

history

Jonathan “Marquis” Théry founded Funeralium in 2003 as a side project on ataraxia after moving to Paris to study. With ataraxia, Théry was playing Death Doom at this point . In addition, he strived for a more extreme and experimental sound and pushed Funeralium as a further band project by inviting the ataraxic guitarist Frédéric "Berserk" Patte-Brasseur and the Heol-Telwen musicians "Yskithyrwynn" as drummer and Vincent "Toxine" Buisson as bassist. In September 2003 the band started rehearsing. The following year, Funeralium signed a deal with Band or Be Banged !! for the release of the demo tape Ultra Sick Doom . The demo was released in June 2004 and was well received in the metal scene. The growing interest in Funeral Doom bands at that time enabled Funeralium to perform solo and at festivals in France , Belgium and the Netherlands , including at the first Ashes to Ashes Doom to Dust Fest in Tilburg . According to Patte-Brasseur, an Extreme Doom community arose in the Netherlands and Belgium during this time, organizing concerts and festivals together, to which Funeralium belonged.

“We all got to know each other quickly, founded a kind of Extreme Doom community and organized a lot of gigs, mainly in the Netherlands and Belgium. Because we only had our demo during these first gigs, it seemed necessary to us that we soon recorded our first album. "

- Frédéric “Berserk” Patte-Brasseur

Totalrust Music and Ostra Records tried to release the self-titled debut . The album, released in October 2007, polarized the reviewers. Even benevolent voices admitted that the album presented music “that you don't hear often, but then surrender to the sick sound.” Critical voices commented that the first half of the album was “not original enough to make you stand out Prototypes to take off the originals. ”The time after the release was marked by several personal problems of the band. The group temporarily suspended all activities. “Yskithyrwynn” and Patte-Brasseur left Funeralium. While “Yskithyrwynn” was replaced by Thomas “AD K 'shon” Rugolino, the position of second guitarist remained vacant for the time being. Across the street, Asmael Lebouc, a second singer and bassist, was brought into the band. Hardly after the band had started rehearsing with the new line-up, Buisson left Funeralium. In his place, Charles Ward joined the band. Before the band had finished writing the next album, Patte-Brasseur returned to Paris and the band.

The second studio album Deceived Idealism was recorded in December 2011 and, due to persistent production delays , was released in 2013 as a double CD via Weird Truth Productions and as a double LP via Ostra Records. With Deceived Idealism , Funeralium was able to record mostly positive international feedback. The album's success enabled the band to perform further in Holland, Germany, Portugal, England, Belgium and Denmark.

Of Throes & Blight was recorded as a third studio album in 2016 and released again the following year via Weird Truth Productions and as an MC via Caligari Records . After the recordings, Rugolino ended his career as a musician and was replaced by the dark ambient musician "RAEV". Meanwhile, Of Throes & Blight was released as a double CD in April and as a double MC in May 2017. Like the previous release, this album received numerous praise. It was Of Throes & Blight as a logical and consistent continuation of its predecessor Deceived Idealism assessed. Reviewer Sean Reveron rated Of Throes & Blight for the webzine Cvlt Nation and called the album a funeral doom masterpiece of the first half of 2017 alongside Backwater by Fuoco Fatuo and Horizionless by Loss . In the genre-specific annual best list of the webzine, the album then took fourth place, behind Bell Witch , Loss and Usnea .

style

The music of Funeralium is assigned to Funeral Doom. Sometimes stylistic elements of black and depressive black metal can be heard. For a closer classification, groups such as Bethlehem , Wormphlegm , Thergothon and Worship are named as comparative variables . The group itself describes their style as Ultra Sick Doom and uses various references to mental illnesses in the self-descriptions and song texts. Thery describes this self-designation as a reminiscence of the Bethlehem album Dark Metal . In addition to Bethlehem and Thergothon, Thery names Saint Vitus , Black Sabbath , Cathedral , Abruptum and Burning Witch as major influences . The pieces are described as "very long and epic". A fundamentally powerful sound is attested to the instrumentation. Melodies and acoustic passages, on the other hand, are rarely used sporadically in harmony with the gloomy basic atmosphere. So playing the guitar is described as excruciating, hard and mostly melody-free riffing . The vocals are mostly presented as guttural growling and screaming . In addition Coming sets Thery howler vocals and a whisper and more, to be joined in the atmosphere of the music, onomatopoeic vocal techniques.
