Gökhan Inler (* 27. June 1984 in Olten , Turkish spelling: Gökhan İnler ) is a Swiss footballer of Turkish descent. He has been under contract with the Turkish club Istanbul Başakşehir since June 2017 .

Career

societies

The talented midfielder Gökhan Inler, who joined FC Olten at the age of eight, made his debut at the age of 16 for the Swiss first division club FC Solothurn before he was signed by the National League A club FC Basel in 2002 for the U-21 team. Despite great progress, however, he was denied the leap into the Basel professional team.

After trial training at Fenerbahçe Istanbul and FC Schaffhausen , Inler finally received his first professional contract with the Swiss super league club FC Aarau , where he made his debut on March 20, 2005 in a 3-2 home defeat by Grasshopper Club Zurich . He was instrumental in keeping the FCA relegated in the 2004/05 season . The following year its development stagnated and in the final phase of the 2005/06 season it was no longer used.

In January 2006, the super league team FC Zurich Inler released the current three-year contract and offered him a contract until June 2009. At FCZ, he replaced Mihai Tararache , who had previously signed with the German Bundesliga club MSV Duisburg . He won the 2005/06 and 2006/07 championship titles with FC Zurich . Together with Xavier Margairaz , Clederson César and Blerim Džemaili , Inler formed the midfield of the FCZ and he was one of the key players. In 2007 the FCZ fans voted him their player of the season.

In June 2007 Inler signed a five-year contract with Serie A club Udinese Calcio . In Udine he was able to fight for a regular place after a successful preparation. At the beginning of January 2008, Gökhan Inler, who wore the shirt number 88 at Udinese Calcio, was voted best foreign newcomer of the summer of 2007 by the Italian sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport because of his consistently good performance in Serie A.

For the 2011/12 season Inler moved to league rivals SSC Napoli . The rumored transfer fee of around 17.7 million euros is the highest ever paid for a Swiss football player. Inler won the Coppa Italia in his first year at Naples .

On August 19, 2015 Inler moved to the English first division club Leicester City and immediately became English champion, but hardly played a role in sport. In August 2016, he moved to Beşiktaş Istanbul and signed a three-year contract until July 2019. After he was more of a reservist in one season and made 14 league appearances, five of them in the starting eleven, he asked for a contract termination in the summer of 2017. After the contract had been terminated, he moved within the league to runner-up Istanbul Başakşehir .

National team

In 2005 Inler was called up for the first time in the Swiss U-21 national team . After initially considering playing for Turkey, he played his first senior international match for Switzerland on September 2, 2006 (1-0 against Venezuela ). The change of heart came after a lengthy conversation with national coach Köbi Kuhn .

On March 22, 2007 in a friendly against Jamaica in Fort Lauderdale ( USA ), he scored his first international goal. The end of a successful season at FCZ was the European Championship test match against Argentina on June 2, 2007. Gökhan Inler played in defensive midfield for the first time from the start. At the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, he was part of the Swiss squad for the first time in a major tournament .

Köbi Kuhn's successor Ottmar Hitzfeld assigned Inler the role of a key player in the national team and promoted him to the new captain on April 23, 2011 after his predecessor Alexander Frei announced his resignation from the national team. Inler played in Italy from 2011 to 2015 and was captain of the Swiss national team in over 40 games. In 2015 he moved to England; Since he was hardly used at Leiceister City, however, he was no longer invited to the European Football Championship in 2016 or for later international appearances.
