Götaland theory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Götaland theory ( Swedish Västgötaskolan ) states that the origins of Swedish history were not in eastern Sweden, but in the southwest region of Götaland , more precisely in Västergötland . This theory emerged in the early 19th century and is still represented regionally today, but has never found widespread scientific acceptance.

During the time of German National Socialism , this theory influenced Swedish archeology to a considerable extent. The background was the conviction of National Socialist ideologues like Walther Darré that Scandinavia and, within Scandinavia, Västergotland was the " original home " of the Germanic peoples.
