Günter Bärwolff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Günter Bärwolff (* 1950 ) is a German mathematician and university professor .

Life

Mathematical and scientific activity

In 1977 Bärwolff received his doctorate from the Academy of Sciences of the GDR on "Numerical treatment of compressible flows taking into account the effects of radiation" with Eberhard Griepentrog . In 1987 he completed his habilitation on the subject of "A contribution to the modeling and numerics of two- and three-dimensional transport processes."

Bärwolff has been a lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin since 1994 . His areas of work are applied mathematics , numerical solution of partial differential equations , finite volume method , direct numerical simulation , control of turbulent thrust flows , mathematical modeling of the formation of crystals , optimizations in fluid dynamics .

In 2018 Bärwolff was a permanent guest at the meetings of the Berlin Mathematical Society .

From 1996 to 2017, Bärwolff held lectures on advanced mathematics for engineers , industrial engineers , computer scientists , technical computer scientists and environmental technicians at the TU Berlin . His book Higher Mathematics for Natural Scientists and Engineers emerged from these lectures in 2005 , the third edition of which was published in 2017.

Political commitment

From 1995 to 2001 Bärwolff was a member of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) and chairman of the Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg district council . In 2009 Bärwolff was a member of the Left Party , which he left in 2011.

Topics and concerns in political work

In his political work, Bärwolff campaigned for issues that were sometimes controversial:

  • 1996: After East Berlin's Willi-Bredel-Strasse was renamed Schivelbeiner Strasse, Bärwolff wrote an apologetic letter to his Polish colleague Henryk Klaman, which was particularly criticized by expellees.
  • 1998: On the occasion of a free religious exhibition in the Prenzlauer Berg Museum , there were disputes between the Humanist Association of Germany and the Free Religious Community on the one hand and the Berlin Institute for Fascism Research and Antifascist Action (BIFFF ...) on the other.
  • 2005: For the maintenance of the currywurst kiosks in Berlin.
  • 2006: For lower prices in local public transport.
  • 2009: For the renaming of part of Antonplatz in Jürgen Kuczynski -Platz. This project failed. Instead, a green space at Kreuzpfuhl in Berlin-Weißensee was named Jürgen Kuczynski Park in 2015 .

Private life

Bärwolff is married and has three children.
