career

Youth and amateur national team until 1967

Günter Keifler, who grew up sporty in the youth department of VfL Marburg , was brought into the DFB selection teams early on via the Hessian screening system. In 1964 he was a member of the German national school team, which played two international matches against England on April 25th in London and on April 27th in Middlesbrough . Both encounters ended in a 1-1 draw and the student from Marburg was used as a left defender. The young player, with a talent for athletics and defense, continued his development and was on April 25, 1966 in the DFB youth national team, which reached a 1-1 draw against Italy in Turin. He formed the final triangle of the German back team with goalkeeper Norbert Nigbur and Egon Köhnen . In May 1966 he participated as a member of the younger A youth class in the UEFA youth tournament in Yugoslavia and completed the group matches against Holland, Scotland and Spain. In his second year in the A-Jugend, 1966/67, he completed the qualifying games against Holland and was again a member of the DFB team for the UEFA tournament in May 1967 in Turkey. Again he was used as a left defender in the three group matches against France, Austria and Hungary. Now his colleagues in defense were goalkeepers Gerhard Heinze and Ewald Schäffner from Nuremberg. Keifler's outstanding talent led him to join the amateur national team just 16 days after the UEFA youth tournament in Turkey on May 25, 1967 in Konstanz . The 18-year-old was only able to gain experience in senior football with VfL Marburg in the second amateur league in the 1966/67 round and played his first international game for the DFB amateurs in defense alongside Rainer Stiller , Egon Schmitt and Peter Different . The game against Italy brought a goalless 0-0 draw for the DFB team around captain Dieter Zettelmaier and debutant Günter Keifler. The hopeful talent accepted Eintracht Frankfurt's offer for the 1967/68 round and switched to the Bundesliga.

Eintracht Frankfurt, 1967 to 1971

Coach Elek Schwartz changed the newcomer from Marburg for the first time in the Bundesliga on matchday eight, September 30, 1967, at the home game against Bayern Munich . Until the 15th matchday, November 25, 1967, with the home game against Eintracht Braunschweig , the promising talent belonged to the original formation of Eintracht. In addition to the Bundesliga appearances against Dortmund, Karlsruhe, Neunkirchen, Hamburg, Cologne and Mönchengladbach, Keifler also came on October 17th in the trade fair cup against Nottingham Forest and on October 25th and November 8th in the two Olympic qualifying games of the amateur national team against Great Britain - in the second leg in Hendon he scored the 1-0 winner for the German team - under DFB coach Udo Lattek . In his eighth Bundesliga game on November 25th, he was replaced in the 55th minute due to an injury and was then unable to play a competitive game in this round. This began the ordeal of footballer Günter Keifler.

With his fourth appearance in the amateur national team on July 2, 1968 in Reykjavík against Iceland, he said goodbye to the circle of DFB amateurs. Together with Dieter Zorc and Klaus Schmidt , he formed the German runner row in the 3-1 success. At the start of the Bundesliga season 1967/68 he was active in the first three games against Hertha BSC, Aachen and MSV Duisburg, followed by the two games against Bremen and Dortmund in September, before he allowed the old complaints of injury from November 1967 again a break until January 1969. On January 18, 1969, he completed his sixth and last Bundesliga game of the round 1968/69. Since his participation in the DFB Cup game on February 5, 1969 - Frankfurt defeated Borussia Dortmund 6-2 - his knee problems again appeared massive, the round for Keifler was then over.

Operative interventions, rehabilitation measures and laborious training structure then determined the process at Günter Keifler for almost two years. With the substitution on the 18th matchday of the round 1970/71, January 23, 1971, in the away game against Hamburger SV, he tried again a comeback. The ex-Marburger finally had to admit defeat after his second appearance on February 6, 1971 with Arminia Bielefeld: his playing career was over, Keifler was declared a sports invalid.

After the playing career

After his active playing career, Günter Keifler was responsible for various functions at his home club VfL Marburg. As a trainer, he led the “Schimmelreiter” back to the Upper House of Hesse in 1985. He had consistently relied on his own offspring. In 1998 he took over the coordination of the youth work. Later he held the office of 2nd chairman at VfB 05 Marburg, where he also reminded the celebrants of the glorious past on the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary on May 13, 2005.
