Günther Teller (born November 24, 1925 in Halle (Saale) ; † June 28, 1982 ) was Lieutenant General of the National People's Army (NVA) and from 1968 to 1982 chairman of the Central Board of the Society for Sport and Technology (GST) of the GDR .

Life

Teller was born the son of a salt boiler in Halle . He attended elementary school and trained as a fitter in the Siebel aircraft factory . In 1943/44, Teller was called up for the Reich Labor Service and then served in an infantry unit until 1945. At the end of the war, Teller was briefly captured by the British, from which he was soon released.

In 1945 he worked as a driver and was one of the co-founders of the Antifa youth in Halle in the same year. In 1945 and 1946 he was a member of the LDPD and head of organization of the Halle youth committee. From 1946 to 1949 he was first secretary of the FDJ district committee in Halle, then secretary for young workers of the FDJ state committee for Saxony-Anhalt. In 1947 he joined the SED .

On September 1, 1949, he became a member of the main training administration and an employee of the political-culture department for youth work. From 1950 to 1951 he attended the Karl Marx party college at the central committee of the SED. From 1953 to 1957 he was head of the youth department in the political administration of the NVA. From 1955 to 1959 he was a member of the Central Council of the FDJ. From 1957 to 1962 he studied at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy in Dresden. From 1962 he was deputy head and later head of the political administration in the command command of Military District III Leipzig. In February 1965 he was appointed to the head of the political headquarters of the MfNV as deputy for the organization of political work . In 1966 he was appointed major general . On February 1, 1968, he was promoted to succeeding Major General Kurt Lohberger as Chairman of the Central Board of GST and on March 1, 1975, he was promoted to Lieutenant General.
