The information relates to the vehicle numbers from 1925

A series of initially 60 railcars and 66 sidecars, which were put into service with the Great Berlin Tram (GBS) between 1912 and 1915, were designated as types 1913/14 . Most of the sidecars were converted into railcars after delivery. The cars were the first GBS vehicles with closed entry platforms, which is why they were also referred to as "glass cars".

development

delivery

The topography of the Berlin tram network was characterized by tight curve radii around the turn of the century. As a result, the vehicles mostly had a center distance of less than 2.00 meters. In order to increase passenger capacity, GBS started using four-axle railcars with maximum bogies from 1901 . Since these were more expensive to maintain, they began at the same time with the renovation of the tracks from the horse-drawn tram era. This meant that wagons with a center distance of 3.00 meters and more could now run.

In 1912 GBS put two pre-production sidecars with numbers 20 and 21 into service. In contrast to the usual roofs, car 20 had a lantern roof that was extended to the ends . The entry platforms were fully closed. The interior had ten side windows, eight larger ones and two smaller ones on the platforms. The 24 seats were arranged in a 2 + 1 arrangement.

In 1913 the first six pre-series railcars with the numbers 3167-3172 followed. The 3167, 3169 and 3170 cars were equipped with pressed sheet metal chassis from Krupp , while the other three railcars had single-axle bogies . The outer transverse seats were replaced by longitudinal benches, which increased the number of seats to 26. The two outer side windows of the passenger compartment were replaced by a larger window, at the same time the car body was slightly shorter than the sidecar. In contrast, the platforms were lengthened and two back doors were installed on both sides for separate entry and exit.

Series delivery of the 64 sidecars began in 1913. The vehicles were given the numbers 22 II –48 II , 162 II –171 II , 354 II –369 II and 395 II –405 II . A year later, 50 railcars with the numbers 3173–3222 followed. The car body was based on the pre-series railcars. The lantern roof was limited to the passenger compartment, the platforms were fully locked and provided with separate entry and exit points on the rear platform. The GBS also retained the seating arrangement of longitudinal and transverse benches. Most of the pressed sheet metal chassis, which all series cars had, were supplied by the Berlin company Böker. Some of the sidecars had chassis from van der Zypen & Charlier in Cologne. Railcar 3176 had a HAWA chassis.

In 1915 two motor coaches and two sidecars were delivered, each with a three-leaf door on the rear platform. The sidecars 49 and 50 were converted into railcars between 1916 and 1920 and received a chassis similar to the Berolina car . They should then have got the numbers 3225 and 3226. The railcars delivered in 1915, like the successor type 1920, had HAWA chassis and probably had the numbers 3223 and 3224. According to other information, the two pairs of numbers are said to have been assigned in reverse.

modification

The cars were given new car numbers after the merger of GBS with the municipal trams and the Berlin electric trams to form the Berlin tram in 1920. The railcars 3168, 3171 and 3172, equipped with single-axle bogies, initially ran as 5443–5445, the series cars were given the numbers 5440–5442 and 5446–5495, and the wagons delivered in 1915 were numbered 5496–5499. The sidecars ran under the numbers 1219-1284.

In 1925, the cars were included in the ongoing modernization program of the Berlin tram. The cars received the usual standard platforms , the double doors for separate entry and exit were omitted. The numbers 5440-5442 and 5443-5445 exchanged numbers for the numerical combination of the series railcars. In order to achieve a type adjustment in the railcar fleet, 54 sidecars were also converted into railcars. This affected the sidecars 1221-1247 and 1258-1284, which received the number series 5605-5658 after the conversion. The remaining sidecars 1248–1257 were given the new car numbers 1221 II –1230 II . A conversion of the two pre-series trailer cars 1219 and 1220 to the multiple units 5603 and 5604 was also planned, but this was not done. In terms of car construction, the two vehicles were adapted to the series. The exterior of the conversion cars could be recognized by the two-part sliding doors between the platform and the passenger compartment; the original railcars were made in one piece.

In 1934, the BVG introduced a type code to identify its vehicle fleet. The 1913 series wagons were given the designation TF 13/25 (railcar) and BF 13/25 (trailer), the bogie wagons the type designation TD 13/25 S and the cars delivered in 1915 including railcar 5446 (ex 3176) the designation TF 13 / 25 p .

Car 5452 was withdrawn from service around 1938, probably after it had been damaged in an accident. The same fate befell railcars 5628 and 5635 in the following year. Around this time, the converted railcars 5498 and 5499 received HAWA chassis.

During the Second World War , the longitudinal benches of the railcars and also the individual seats of some sidecars were removed in order to increase passenger capacity. In 1943, the five railcars 5446, 5457, 5460, 5485 and 5492 were handed over to the Düsseldorf tram because the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft had a shortage of wagons due to air raids . In 1948 the cars came back to Berlin, where they remained in the western part of the city from 1949. At the same time, the other railcars were given coupling devices for towing trucks to save fuel.

Administrative separation and decommissioning

Railcar 5455 on line 71E at Molkenmarkt, 1955

After the end of the war, 76 motor coaches and eight sidecars were still operational. The other vehicles, including the pre-production sidecar 1220, were destroyed in the war or so badly damaged that they could not be rebuilt. Flatbed bodies were placed on at least three underframes of war-damaged wagons and the wagons were used as G383 to G385 freight trucks. When the BVG was separated from the administration in August 1949, 29 motor coaches and four trailer cars remained with the BVG (east), the remaining cars (47 motor coaches, four sidecars) with the BVG (west).

The BVG (East) began an extensive conversion of the cars in the early 1950s. The arrangement of the target signs and corner lanterns was modeled on the T 24 . The lantern roofs were replaced by barrel roofs . The six middle side windows have been combined into three larger windows. All side windows were divided in the upper quarter, the upper part could be folded up for ventilation. The hinged windows retained the old six-part division. The railcars 5483 and 5488 received completely new superstructures and one-piece sliding doors at Waggonbau Gotha . Another railcar was used from 1958 to 1965 as a teaching car - officially called the Technical Cabinet - with the number T1. It is not clear whether this is one of the 29 railcars from the takeover or one that was defective after the end of the war. After the end of its service life, the vehicle was scrapped. Railcar 14 of the Woltersdorfer Tram (ex Berlin 5632) in Rahnsdorf, 1972

The remaining East Berlin railcars were decommissioned by 1963 and some of them were sold. The Woltersdorfer tram received the railcars 5611, 5617, 5622, 5630, 5632 and 5644, where they were reconstructed from 1964 and then used again in passenger traffic. They ran there under the numbers 10 to 15 and were used there until the end of the 1970s. The four remaining sidecars 1227 to 1230 were included in the Recoprogram in 1969 and converted into type BE 64 sidecars . They ran until 1970 under the numbers 2175 to 2178, then under 267 279 to 267 282.

The TF 13/25 that remained in West Berlin could no longer be used in passenger traffic from July 3, 1950 due to the design of their hand brakes. The 5658 railcar, which continued to run until the end of 1954, was an exception. The BVG (West) then converted it into the A339 work car. After 1949, the bogie wagons were mostly traveling solo on the 40E line in Steglitz and were retired on May 2, 1951 (No. 5441 II ) and December 15, 1952 (No. 5440 II , 5442 II ). The sidecars were scrapped up. Of the cars that were retired in 1950, BVG (West) converted 39 vehicles for the work car park (numbers A300-A338). Seven work cars (A300, A311, A313, A316, A330, A331 and A337) remained in the fleet until the tram traffic was discontinued in 1967, the last vehicle to be retired was the A313.

Historical inventory

Tw 5472 in the state of 1950 in the Vehicle Collection Monumentenhalle, 2018

After its retirement, the A313 work car ended up in the BVG vehicle collection at the Britz depot . In 1976 it was externally restored to its 1950 state, and its old number 5472 was returned. Since the collection was dissolved in 1993, the vehicle has been in the monument hall of the German Museum of Technology in Berlin .

Railcar 5617 came to Woltersdorf in 1962 and was converted for passenger service until 1964. It then ran until 1978 as car 11. It was then given the number 26 and was withdrawn shortly afterwards. In Berlin, it was planned to rework it into the historic 3208 railcar. Since 1998, the vehicle has been in its last operational condition in the Rügen Oldtimer Museum .

Railcar 5630 also ran in Woltersdorf from 1968 (number 15, from 1978 number 25) and was returned to Berlin in 1987. It is currently in the Niederschönhausen depot and is waiting to be processed. The vehicle is to be reset to the delivery condition.

Vehicle list

The following list provides an overview of the multiple units and sidecars of types 1924 and 1925. The table is sorted in ascending order according to the vehicle number. The type B 24/52 sidecars are also listed in the table due to their unclear origin, so that a total of 1308 entries are recorded for 1304 vehicles built.
