The GIRD-09 (also: R1 , Russian ГИРД-09 ) was the first Soviet hybrid missile . It first flew on August 17, 1933.

development

It was developed in development department 2 of the GIRD under the direction of Mikhail Tichonrawow from 1932. a. also Sergei Korolev . The ground test runs began in March 1933. Difficulties with the unstable hybrid engine delayed the testing by almost five months. The first launch took place on August 17th in Nachabino near Moscow at 7:00 p.m. It lasted 18 seconds and the rocket reached a height of 400 meters. This start is considered to be the hour of birth of Soviet rocket construction.

A second start in autumn 1933 failed because the engine exploded. As a more powerful further development, the model 13 was created , of which six copies were built.
