Gabriele Ferro

Gabriele Ferro (born November 15, 1937 in Pescara ) is an Italian conductor.

The son of the composer Pietro Ferro studied piano and composition at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome . After winning the RAI competition for young conductors in 1970 , he regularly conducted the orchestras of the RAI, La Scala in Milan and Santa Cecilia.

Internationally he performed a. a. with the Vienna and Bamberg Symphony Orchestra , the Orchester de la Suisse Romande , the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France and the BBC Symphony Orchestra . From 1979 to 1991 he was conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana , in addition first conductor of the Orchestra della RAI and general music director of the Stuttgart State Opera . His repertoire includes the works of contemporary composers such as Luciano Berio , Aldo Clementi , Bruno Maderna , Karlheinz Stockhausen , György Ligeti and Luigi Nono .

Since 1978 Ferro made a name for himself as an opera conductor and conducted a. a. at the Teatro La Fenice opera house in Venice, the Teatro communale in Florence, the Covent Garden Opera in London, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and opera houses in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tel Aviv.

Ferro has been Music Director at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples since 1999, and Principal Guest Conductor at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo since 2001 . Recordings with him have been released by Deutsche Grammophon , Sony and Emi .
