Gabriele "Gaby" Weber (born January 4, 1954 in Stuttgart ) is a German publicist . One focus of her publications is the history of German-Latin American relations.

life and work

Weber studied Romance languages and journalism at the Free University of Berlin , where in 1979 with the Master of Arts graduated and 1982 at the Institute for Latin American doctorate was. The co-founder of taz has worked as a journalist since 1978 and as a freelance correspondent since 1986, first from Montevideo and from 2002 on from Buenos Aires . There she works mainly for the broadcasting companies of the ARD .

In addition to being a correspondent , she has published several reports and extensive research on the history of intelligence activities. Including talks with guerrilla leaders in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay in 1989, in 2004 about Daimler-Benz and the Argentina Connection and in 2005 a play about Adolf Eichmann and atomic research in Argentina. The research on this topic led to extensive correspondence and reports on the federal government's intelligence archive records, which are still blocked. However, after a decision by the Federal Administrative Court , most of the archives blocked by the Federal Chancellery as the supervisory authority must be released.

According to his own account, Weber was prevented from entering the United States and questioned by officers from the US Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP) at Washington Dulles International Airport on August 17, 2010 . She had an ESTA travel authorization with her. She was not allowed to notify a lawyer or the German consulate. Weber wanted the Federal Archives of Washington research the whereabouts of German war criminals after the Second World War. The reason given was the lack of entry documents.

According to his own account, Weber learned in 2011 while researching the Colonia Dignidad that files of the BND , which she had previously fought for to inspect, had been destroyed by a so-called “emergency act of destruction”. Weber suspects that the files contained material that would have incriminated the BND or other German state organs. The federal government denies this representation.

In her book Eichmann was still needed , published in 2012, Weber considers it likely that the kidnapping of Adolf Eichmann to Israel should only distract from the discovery of secret underground nuclear tests by the USA in Argentina, which threatened to become known due to the Valdivia earthquake in 1960 . Weber's new distraction thesis met with criticism in the media; Rainer Blasius described the author in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as a “conspiracy theorist”, Die Welt spoke of a “prime example of how conspiracy theories work”. The philosopher Bernhard Taureck, on the other hand, described Weber's research as thorough and her thesis as “well-founded assumptions”.

In 2017 Weber supported the establishment of the online magazine Rubikon, from which she turned away three weeks later.

In 2019, Weber wrote on Telepolis that Bayer AG's takeover of Monsanto was financed with taxpayers' money. This was because the Bundesbank had bought corporate bonds from Bayer . The daily newspaper (taz) rated this report as a false report that Weber was subject to two mistakes, namely that the Bundesbank had tax money and that the central banks' monetary policy was something like subsidies .
