Gail Rowell-Ryan

Gail Roswell-Ryan (born January 11, 1939 in Cincinnati ) is an American hairdresser . She won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Makeup and Hairstyle alongside makeup artist Rick Baker for her work on The Grinch .

Life

Rowell-Ryan began her film crew career in 1974 with television. Her first feature film was Roger Spottiswoode's adventure film The Hunt . As a result, she worked on Hollywood productions such as The Seventh Character , The Naked Cannon and Mr. Magoo . In 2001 she and Rick Baker won an Oscar for Ron Howard's Christmas film The Grinch in the category of Best Make-up and Best Hairstyles . She also received the award in the Best Mask category at the BAFTA Film Awards held in the same year .

In addition to her engagements in film, Rowell-Ryan has also worked extensively for television, including the television series Carousel of the Dolls and Who's the Boss Here? and the talent show Dancing with the Stars . She has also worked as a makeup artist at numerous award ceremonies, including the MTV Video Music Awards , the Grammy Awards , the Oscar Awards , and the Golden Globe Awards . For her work in television, she was nominated nine times for the Primetime Emmy between 1994 and 2017 , which she never won.

She has won the Artisan, the industry award from the Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild, three times . In 2014 she was awarded a prize for her life's work.

Her best-known customers include Leslie Nielsen , Naomi Watts , Sean Penn , Dustin Hoffman , Ray Liotta , Nick Nolte and, for some time now, Benicio Del Torro .
