The Galatasaray High School ( Turkish Galatasaray Lisesi , French Lycée de Galatasaray ) is an elite school in Istanbul , which was founded by Sultan Bayezid II in 1481 as the "Imperial Galata Palace School" (Galata Sarayi Enderun-u Hümayunu) . In 1866 the grammar school (French: lycée , Turkish: lise ) was opened as the “Imperial Galatasaray School” (Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultani) based on the French model .
history
The Galatasaray High School is located on Galatasaray Square in the Galata district in the Beyoğlu district in the European part of Istanbul. The high school is an Anadolu Lisesi and was established in the former building of the medical college. The school was initially divided into three courtyards, one each for the younger, middle and older classes. The school had its own hammam and hospital. The school program was like the French one, with the difference that instead of Latin and Greek, Turkish, Arabic and Persian were taught here. However, the two classic languages and German were taught during voluntary evening hours. In addition to Turks and French, the teachers were also Greeks and Armenians. The school provided the food, the clothes (so there should have been a uniform for outside), school materials, as well as paper, etc.
When the Republic of Turkey was founded in 1923, the school was finally renamed Galatasaray Lisesi . Coeducation was introduced in 1968, and today around 40% of students are female. After the conclusion of a Franco-Turkish agreement in 1992, the Galatasaray University was founded, to which the grammar school has been affiliated with a primary school that was founded at the same time.
