History and profile

The Galerie Hans Brockstedt OHG was founded in 1957 by Hans Brockstedt as a gallery for modern art in Hanover on Georgsplatz. In 1959 the gallery moved to Warburgstrasse in Hamburg as a neighbor of the artist Horst Janssen . After another move in 1961 to the corner of Poststrasse and Hohe Bleichen, the gallery has been located in Hamburg-Pöseldorf at Magdalenenstrasse 11 since 1970. In 1992, a branch was opened in Berlin-Halensee , first in Joachim-Friedrich-Strasse , then in Berlin-Wilmersdorf on Sächsische Strasse , later opened in Berlin-Charlottenburg at Mommsenstrasse 59 (since 2001), which is managed by Boris Brockstedt, the son of Hans Brockstedt. The Brockstedt Gallery was first known through its work with the artists of Expressionism such as Marc Chagall , Alexej Jawlensky , Emil Nolde , Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and the New Objectivity ( Otto Dix , George Grosz , Franz Radziwill , Christian Schad ). Later she campaigned for the group of Cologne progressives ( Gerd Arntz , Otto Freundlich , Heinrich Hoerle and Franz Seiwert ).

The intensive care of the estate results from the collaboration with the artist Horst Janssen. The estates of Ivo Hauptmann , Paul Joostens and Richard Oelze are also looked after by Galerie Brockstedt.

In addition to the different focuses of Classical Modernism - especially the first three decades of the 20th century - the Galerie Brockstedt presents a large number of post-war realists ( Johannes Grützke , Francisco López Hernández , Siegfried Klapper , Isabel Quintanilla , Annette Schröter , Reinhard Stangl , Diether Kressel , Bruno Bruni , Friedrich Meckseper and others), German Informel artists ( Willi Baumeister , Ernst Wilhelm Nay and Emil Schumacher ) and contemporary abstract artists ( Mark Safan , Jupp Linssen , Gust Romijn ). The contemporary program includes the painters Tino Geiß and Rocco Hettwer.

In the spirit of the 1920s, the gallery owners Hans and Boris Brockstedt in Hamburg and Berlin presented figurative painting and sculpture parallel to non-figurative positions and gave the artists the opportunity to present statements and perspectives in a wide variety of ways and using a wide variety of techniques.

The family company is now run by the second generation. The company's founder, Hans Brockstedt, died in autumn 2017.

Galerie Brockstedt is a member of the State Association of Berlin Galleries, the State Association of Hamburg Galleries and the Federal Association of German Galleries and Art Dealers. V.
