Career

South Africa (1975–1978)

Since his father, the former English soccer goalkeeper Roy Bailey, emigrated to South Africa, Gary Bailey spent the first years of his playing career at the South African clubs Cape Town City and Wits University .

Manchester United (1978–1987)

In 1978 he moved to the English first division club Manchester United , where he succeeded longtime goalkeeper Alex Stepney . Bailey made his professional debut in English football on November 18, 1978 in United's 2-0 home win over Ipswich Town. In the course of the Football League First Division 1978/79 he played another twenty-seven games and ended the season in ninth place in the table. In his first season he made it into the final of the FA Cup 1978/79 , but lost this game 2: 3 against Arsenal. In the following season the team and regular goalkeeper Gary Bailey was runner-up behind Liverpool FC. Another good placement succeeded the club two years later in the First Division 1981/82 as third in the table. In the 1982/83 UEFA Cup, however , the team failed in the first round like two years earlier. In addition to another third place in the league, United moved to Gordon McQueen , Bryan Robson , Frank Stapleton and Bailey in the final of the FA Cup 1982/83 , where they defeated Brighton & Hove Albion (2-2 and 4-0 in the replay) . Previously, Manchester had already lost the final of the English League Cup in 1982/83 against Liverpool 2-1 and thus missed a double success in both English cup competitions. In the 1983/84 European Cup Winners' Cup , the club moved into the semi-finals against Juventus Turin led by Michel Platini after a success in the quarter-finals over FC Barcelona (0-2 and 3-0) and lost the second leg there after a 1-1 home match in Turin with 1: 2. Also in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup , the team failed to make it into the final after a surprising quarter-final against the eventual finalists Videoton FC . This was United's last international appearance in the following years, as all English clubs had been excluded from the European Cup as a result of the Heysel disaster . But Bailey succeeded with his teammates Gordon Strachan and Mark Hughes his second title in the FA Cup 1984/85 . In the final United defeated Everton FC with a goal from Norman Whiteside in the 110th minute 1-0 after extra time. After a knee injury in a training game during the 1986 World Cup, Bailey missed much of the 1986/87 season, then ended his career and returned to South Africa. In 1988 he made a comeback with the Kaizer Chiefs before finally ending his playing career in 1990.

England national team (1985)

Gary Bailey made his debut on March 26, 1985 in a 2-1 friendly against Ireland in the English national team. On June 9, 1985, he played his second international match with the hosts of the upcoming World Cup in Mexico and lost it 0-1. A year later he was appointed to the English World Cup squad by coach Bobby Robson , but remained only third goalkeeper behind regular goalkeeper Peter Shilton and substitute Chris Woods . England were eliminated in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Argentina.
