Hassi R'Mel ( Arabic حاسي الرمل) Is a natural gas field in the province of Laghouat in Algeria . The field is the largest in Africa and one of the largest gas fields in the world . In the center of the field is the village of the same name, Hassi R'Mel . From here the field extends about 70 km in north-south and 50 km in east-west direction.

The deposit was discovered in 1956 when French companies were looking for oil in Algeria. Development began in 1961. The size of the deposit has been estimated at up to 3000 billion m³, of which around 2400 billion are economically exploitable. Around 100 billion m³ are extracted every year; this corresponds to about a quarter of the Algerian annual funding .

Hassi R'Mel is an important hub in the pipeline network between Africa and Europe. The place is the starting point of the Maghreb-Europe pipelines (via Morocco to Spain), Medgaz (to Spain), Transmed (via Tunisia to Italy) and GALSI (via Sardinia to Italy) as well as the end point of the planned Trans-Sahara pipeline (from Nigeria) .
