Gaspar de Bracamonte y Guzmán
Don Gaspar de Bracamonte y Guzmán, 3rd Count and Grandee of Peñaranda ( 3 ° conde de Peñaranda ) (* around 1595/6; † September 16, 1676 ) was a Spanish statesman and diplomat . During the peace negotiations in Munster , which ended the Thirty Years War , he was Spanish Plenipotentiary, Viceroy of Naples from 1659 to 1664 and, after the death of King Philip IV, one of the regents of the Kingdom of Spain.
Life
Bracamonte was the son of the Spanish prince educator Alonsono de Bracamonte , through whom he got early contacts to the Spanish court. He married Maria de Bracamonte, daughter of his older brother Balthazar Emmanuel and heiress of Peñaranda County. Since their son, Gregorio, 4 ° conde de Peñaranda, Grand Commander of Calatrava and Castilian Grande, died childless in spite of two marriages in 1689, the county of Peñaranda finally fell to Maria's younger sister Antonia.
On behalf of Philip IV, he spent three years in Münster from July 5, 1645, as Spain's envoy on the principle, and was accompanied by an entourage of 112. There he took part in the cultural life of Münster and negotiated mainly with the representatives of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces (the northern Netherlands) and France. In 1648 he saw the peace treaty of the Peace of Westphalia . He commented on this with his now famous remark: “ The whole of Münster is a valley of joy! "
On his return to Spain he became the adviser to the king's widow, Maria Anna of Austria , who took over the reign of her underage son Charles II .
