The Roßau gasworks in what is now the 9th district of Alsergrund in Vienna was the first privately run gasworks in Vienna .

history

On the basis of the knowledge he had acquired in the largest gasometers in London and Paris, the pharmacist Georg Pfendler initially produced gas for his own use in order to use both his old field pharmacy in Bischofgasse 633 (later equivalent: Rotenturmstraße 3) and his pharmacy hall in der Roßau , Schmidgasse 153–154 (later equivalent: Porzellangasse  7), and, last but not least, to supply customers with the gas filled in containers.

After the sale of the pharmacy, on January 23, 1828, the chemist with a doctorate was granted the exclusive privilege limited to two years to work extensively on the technical improvement of portable gas lighting within the framework of the Austrian Society for Lighting with Portable Gas . On June 4, 1828, Pfendler was granted another relevant privilege for a period of six years. In 1830, parts of the patent granted on January 25, 1828 ( recte : January 23, 1828) were officially released.

The subsequently built Roßau gasworks was Vienna's first gasworks. In 1830 the Lower Austrian Lieutenancy was asked for permission to lay a pipeline from the Roßau plant (Porzellangasse 7) to Vienna-Innere Stadt to supply private customers . This permit was granted on May 14, 1832, and work on the pipe-laying began in autumn 1834.

Prominent customers of the Austrian Society for Lighting with Gas were among others the kk Academy of Fine Arts ( Annagasse  3 / Johannesgasse  4) housed in the Annahof (which no longer exists today in its original form ) and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank with the 1819-24 according to plans by Charles de Moreau built the main building ( Herrengasse  17 / Bankgasse  1). From autumn 1839, the street lighting that the company had successfully put into operation on the Neuer Markt was further expanded.

Because of the high cost of coal - that time there were no leading to Vienna railway connection for a cost-effective transportation of the necessary quality coal - the gas out was resin and rapeseed oils produced.

In 1836 Georg Pfendler's entire fortune was declared bankrupt; On March 1, 1838, the middle-class pharmacist who had been 86 years old died of old age at Himmelpfortgasse 962 (later equivalent: Himmelpfortgasse 12).

After the Imperial-Continental-Gas-Association gained a foothold in 1842 with the acquisition of the Fünfhaus gasworks in Vienna, the Austrian Society for Lighting with Gas tried to expand its customer base and on October 15, 1842, asked for permission to build more gas lines to be allowed to lay. Since this was permitted to both of the gas factories operating in Vienna on April 26, 1843, the Austrian Society for Lighting with Gas appealed against it. However, the City of Vienna's magistrate recommended that the Lieutenancy reject this appeal, as the monopoly of a single gas supplier in Vienna was not desired.

Since it was clear to the Austrian Society for Lighting with Gas that it could not hold its own against the financially and technically better off Imperial Continental Gas Association , they entered into sales negotiations with the English company. The talks were concluded on October 20, 1843, the technical systems were handed over on January 1, 1844.

The Roßau gasworks was shut down by the Imperial-Continental-Gas-Association in 1846; only the gasometer continued to operate until 1852.
