Mountain Association for Saxon Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mountain Association for Saxon Switzerland was a tourist association that existed from 1877 to 1943/45 and played a key role in opening up the Elbe Sandstone Mountains for broad sections of the population.

history

The association was founded on October 15, 1877 in Schandau . The association was called "Mountain Association for Saxon-Bohemian Switzerland" until the Bohemian members split off in 1890, because it was to be responsible for both the Saxon part and the Bohemian part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains . Sophus Ruge from Pirna took over the chairmanship of the association . The publication of the association newspaper “Über Berg und Thal”, the first issue of which appeared on March 17, 1878, is also thanks to him. The booklets were published by H. Ostermanns Erben in Pirna. The large Dresden section also published some of its annual reports of the Mountain Association for Saxon Switzerland in print. There was also a yearbook of the mountain association for Saxon Switzerland for a few years .

Sophus Ruge was the first chairman of the association until 1885, then the local researcher Oscar Lehmann took over the leadership of the association until 1905 . He was followed by Alfred Meiche , who was also the editor of the club's magazine, by 1913 , by Arthur Wallenstein by 1920, and finally by Karl Lampe . The last issue of the club magazine was published in March 1943.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the mountain association consisted of 44 sections with over 3500 members.
