Geffen Records is an American music label . Today it belongs to the Universal Music Group , which is in turn a subsidiary of Vivendi (formerly Vivendi Universal). It forms part of the Interscope Geffen A&M group of the Universal Music Group.

Company history

The label was founded in 1975 by David Geffen , which was carried by Warner Bros. Records . Geffen founded Asylum Records in 1972 . Geffen Records was therefore originally part of Warner Bros. Records . Warner sold it to the MCA in 1990 . When Seagram took over MCA in 1995, the MCA's music division was restructured into the Universal Music Group . With the purchase of Polygram , UMG grew into the world's largest music group, which has been restructured on a smaller scale since then.

In order to save costs, the label MCA Records - named after the former, large parent company MCA - was merged with Geffen. Geffen was chosen as the label name because he was better known; the last former MCA Records label is the country music label MCA Nashville Records .

At the end of 2007 / beginning of 2008, Universal combined the Geffen label with the Interscope Records and A&M Records labels to form the Interscope Geffen A&M group. Geffen has been part of the group ever since.
