Geiseltalmuseum

The Geiseltalmuseum is a geological - paleontological museum in Halle (Saale) . It is located not far from the market square in the former chapel in the north wing of the New Residence, built in 1531 by Cardinal Albrecht II of Brandenburg (1514–1545) .

On display are finds of the flora and fauna of the Geiseltal fossil deposit from the Middle Eocene from the Geiseltal southwest of Halle , which was used economically as a brown coal mining area until 1993 . These include very well-preserved plant remains, which may even contain chlorophyll , as well as the ancient horse Propalaeotherium , crocodiles and beetles.

The Geiseltalmuseum was founded on November 23, 1934 by Johannes Weigelt (1890–1948), the then director of the Geological and Paleontological Institute of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . The collection includes around 50,000 fossils and is part of the central magazine for natural science collections at Martin Luther University. On December 20, 2011, the Geiseltalmuseum closed its doors to the public, the exhibits were not to be accessible to the public again until 2015 as part of the development of a natural history university museum . However, this could not be implemented in the following six and a half years. The Geiseltalmuseum reopened to visitors on May 5, 2018.
