Gene Sedric , actually Eugene Hall Sedric, (born June 17, 1907 in St. Louis , † April 3, 1963 in New York City ) was an American tenor saxophonist and clarinetist .

Live and act

Sedric was the son of ragtime pianist Paul "Can Can" Sedric. Before he joined Fats Waller in 1934 , he had already had a small musical career, playing with Charlie Creath (1922), in the pleasure boat bands of Fate Marable and Dewey Jackson , then in the big bands with Sam Wooding (1923 to 1934) and Fletcher Henderson . In 1938 the first recordings were made under his own name; In 1943 he had his own band; in the 1940s he also worked with Jimmy McPartland , Bobby Hackett and Phil Moore . In the 1950s he worked a. a. with Mezz Mezzrow (1953 in France, where he recorded for the Swing label ) and Conrad Janis .

Sedric was considered the master of the "big sound" and was the clarinet teacher of the famous amateur jazz musician Woody Allen .
