Gene fornby is called an Iron Age settlement in Genesmon, Örnsköldsvik municipality , Sweden . It was the residence of a chief and was inhabited for the first six centuries AD. At the beginning of the first century AD, the settlement was directly by the sea and at the mouth of the Moälven , but the post-glacial uplift silted up the bay and the course of the Moälven changed, today the archaeological site is about four hundred meters from the sea. A total of 15 houses were excavated, including several longhouses and a forge.

The settlement was found while road works in 1976 and excavated between 1977 and 1988. The oldest building dates from the 1st, the youngest from the 6th century AD. A few hundred meters from its original location, the settlement was reconstructed in the 6th century and opened to the public in 1991.

There was a forge here which, according to calculations based on the quantities of slag and ash found, processed about 290 kilograms of iron over a century (probably the fifth century). The pig iron from Jämtland was turned into 171 kilograms of finished items, e.g. B. household appliances or weapons, forged. In the various foods , very high proportions of burned bones were found in some cases, this indicates that the blacksmith wanted to have a high proportion of phosphorus in the iron in some cases, this was used to create a Damascus pattern in the finished item . In addition to iron, bronze was also processed here, including buckles, rings and needles. Traces of gold in the found molds indicate that some of the objects were gilded. Several bronze coins from Roman times were found in the vicinity of the residential area, evidence that the local people had contact with far-flung traders.
