from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margrave Georg von Baden (* 1433 , † 11. February 1484 in Moyen ) was from 1453 to 1454 ruling Margrave of Baden and from 1459 until his death Bishop in Metz . He was the fourth son from the marriage of Margrave Jacob I of Baden with Catherine of Lorraine .

Margrave and Bishop

According to his grandfather's instructions, no more than two sons should be considered as heirs of the margraviate. Therefore only his older brothers Karl and Bernhard received a secular education and he and all other siblings received a strictly spiritual education. After being in the clergy at a young age, Georg returned to the secular state for a short time in order to become the ruling margrave. In 1454, however, he returned to the clergy to finally become bishop in Metz . His brother Karl followed him as the ruling margrave.

Badisch-Palatinate War

Georg took an active part in the Baden -Palatinate War in 1461/1462 , which broke out because of the Mainz collegiate feud . Since 1459 Diether von Isenburg and Adolf II. Von Nassau had been fighting over the chair of the Archbishop of Mainz .

Adolf allied himself with Georg, the Archbishop of Trier Johann II. Von Baden , the Bishop Johann II. Von Speyer and the Count Ulrich V. von Württemberg . After Margrave Karl I of Baden tried to mediate between the quarreling camps, he then joined Adolf's party at the side of his brother. It then came to the Badisch-Palatinate War , with the attempt to take the diocese of Mainz by force.

On the other hand, Elector Friedrich von der Pfalz , who wanted to secure his power in the Rhine-Neckar area, fought above all .

In the decisive battle near Seckenheim , Georg and his allies were crushed. Margrave Charles I and he were wounded and taken prisoner. When Ulrich V was captured shortly afterwards by Hans von Gemmingen , the war ended with a victory for Friedrich. He had the prisoners brought to his Heidelberg castle and chained there until they made the ransom payments he demanded. Bishop Georg had to pay 45,000 guilders for his release , his brother Karl only 25,000 guilders. But he had to give his share in the county of Sponheim as a pledge and declare Pforzheim a Palatinate fief .
