Georg Anthes (born March 12, 1863 in Homburg , † February 23, 1922 in Budapest ) was a German violinist , opera singer ( mezzo-soprano and tenor ) and theater director .

Life

Anthes, son of the member of the Kurkapelle Christian Anthes, was destined for a musical career because he showed musical inclination and talent at an early age. First he learned to play the violin and was employed by the Homburg municipal spa and theater band. Only his beautiful mezzo-soprano, who was pleasantly noticed at concerts and in the church, showed him the really correct artistic path. And so he took lessons from Professor Emanuel Stockhausen in Frankfurt, under whose direction the young singer, supported by his unusual vocal resources, stepped forward quickly. After completing his artistic training, he worked as a concert singer for three years, traveling to the Rhineland and Holland as such. However, this artistic activity was not entirely sufficient for Anthes, and he decided to move on to the stage. First of all he perfected himself with Cesare Galiera in Milan. So thoroughly prepared, he tried his hand at Freiburg i. B. for the first time as a stage singer. Just one year later, in May, he was a guest at the Dresden Court Opera Theater. He also drew attention to himself at this art venue, and after the guest performance was over, Anthes was hired as the first hero tenor for the aforementioned court stage in place of Heinrich Gudehus, who was called to Berlin . In 1894 he was given the title of Königl. Chamber singer awarded. He also sang in Bayreuth and was considered a great Wagner interpreter of his time. In 1892 he sang "Walther von Stolzing" in the Meistersinger at the Bayreuth Festival .

In 1902 he broke his contract in Dresden to sing at the New York Metropolitan Opera for a year.

From 1903 to 1908 he was at the Budapest Opera, from 1908 to 1909 again at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1909 he returned to Budapest and sang there until 1913.

He also made guest appearances at the Riga Opera House in 1898, at the Stadttheater of Basel in 1900, where he played Tannhäuser , in 1900 at the Court Theater of Stuttgart, in 1901 and 1902 at the Munich Court Opera, also at the Court Theaters of Wiesbaden and Karlsruhe and at the Frankfurt Opera Houses a. M. and Leipzig. From 1913 he was professor at the Budapest Conservatory and from 1920 director of the Budapest Opera.

His voice is recorded on a Mapleson cylinder .
