Georg Apfelbeck

Georg Apfelbeck , called Schorsch Apfelbeck , (born June 3, 1914 in Munich ; † December 21, 1982 ) was a German building contractor and table tennis functionary. Apfelbeck studied structural engineering at the Munich State Building School and later ran a construction company in Munich. He died of a stroke .

Table tennis

At the age of six, Georg Apfelbeck joined the TSV Milbertshofen club . Here he was active in the gymnastics department and played soccer and handball. Finally he concentrated on table tennis. In 1931 he founded the independent association TTC Milbertshofen together with his brother Ludwig. He was its chairman for 21 years. After the Second World War , this club was integrated into TSV Milbertshofen.

Georg Apfelbeck was one of the co-founders of the Bavarian table tennis association BTTV . In 1947 he took over the chairmanship of the state arbitration tribunal of the BTTV, in 1951 he was elected president. He held this office for 22 years before being replaced by Rudi Gruber in 1973 . At the beginning of the 1960s he prepared the establishment of the South German Table Tennis Association , which was founded on July 7, 1962. Georg Apfelbeck was the first chairman of this association until his death.

In addition, Apfelbeck took on other official duties. He was a member of the German Table Tennis Association (DTTB) , was a member of the organizing committee for the 1969 World Cup in Munich and was a member of the building committee for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. He was the first table tennis official to be honored with the Federal Cross of Merit.

Georg Apfelbeck Memorial Prize

Since 1984 the Bavarian Table Tennis Association BTTV has honored people who have made a contribution to the sporting and organizational development of this association with the Georg-Apfelbeck Memorial Prize .
