Georg Boomgaarden

Georg Boomgaarden (born June 24, 1948 in Emden ) is a German diplomat , former State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office and until 2013 Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Great Britain and Northern Ireland .

biography

Georg Boomgaarden studied geophysics at the University of Kiel after graduating from high school . In 1974 he joined the Foreign Service of the Federal Republic of Germany. He initially worked at the German embassies in Moscow (1976–1980) and Buenos Aires (1980–1983) and at the headquarters of the Foreign Office (1983–1989). In 1984 he prepared the first European-Central American dialogue (San José Conference). In 1986 he was on the crisis team for the liberation of 8 Germans kidnapped by Contras in Nicaragua. 1986-1989 he was in charge of IT reorganization in the Foreign Office based on a global PC network. He was then ambassador to Nicaragua (1989–1992) and then head of the economic department of the embassy in Moscow (1992–1995). Since 1995 he has been responsible for relations with Latin America at the headquarters of the Federal Foreign Office , from 2002 also deputy head of Political Department 3 of the Federal Foreign Office. Boomgaarden was ambassador to Spain from January 2003, and from July 2005 to the end of June 2008 he was State Secretary of the Foreign Office. Until 2013 he was the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Great Britain and Northern Ireland (formal designation in English: Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Court of St James's ), which also includes the territories directly subordinate to the Crown such as B. includes the Channel Islands. In 2014 Boomgaarden retired. His successor as ambassador to London is Peter Ammon .

Georg Boomgaarden is married and has three children. He has been a member of the SPD since 1970 .
