Engelbach studied in Darmstadt from 1833 to 1837 and then in Munich. From 1846 he worked and lived in Berlin. He created portraits of members of the Prussian ruling house (including Kaiser Wilhelm I , Kaiser Wilhelm II , Empress Auguste Victoria ), of important contemporaries (such as the "gymnastics father" Friedrich Ludwig Jahn , the pianist Anton Rubinstein , the violinist and composer Louis Spohr , the composer Richard Wagner ) as well as from people from his family and friends.

As an enthusiastic gymnast, he and two colleagues put together the “German Gymnastics Song Book” , supplemented by a “Patriotic Historian” (14th edition, Berlin 1913).
