Georg Ernst Reimer

Georg Ernst Reimer (born November 25, 1804 in Berlin ; † January 5, 1885 there ) was a German publisher and politician.

Georg Ernst Reimer was the son of Georg Andreas Reimer . Like Bismarck, he attended the Plamann educational institution as a nobleman . After graduating from school, he studied in Berlin and Bonn with the historian Barthold Georg Niebuhr, among others . In religious terms he remained a supporter of Friedrich Schleiermacher , who had also been his godfather. In 1826 he joined his father's book trade and publishing house. After his death in 1842 he became head of the company. In 1847 the graphic and art publishing house was spun off. Brother Dietrich Reimer took over the management .

In 1858 Georg Ernst Reimer moved the company and his apartment from Wilhelmstrasse to Anhaltstrasse. The publishing house continued to devote itself to the publication of scientific literature. In addition to works by well-known scientists, his publishing house also published the Protestant Church Newspaper and the Prussian Yearbooks .

The son Ernst Reimer became an authorized signatory in 1865 and a partner in 1876. In 1884 the company was completely transferred to this.

Reimer was also active in the interests of the book trade. From 1850 to 1852 he was head of the German Booksellers Association .

Reimer also participated in local and state politics. He was one of the so-called old liberals . Between 1846 and 1872 he was a member of the Berlin city council. There he temporarily acted as deputy chairman. Between 1852 and 1861 he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives .
