Georg Johann Friedrich von Guaita , ennobled in 1813 (* July 2, 1772 in Frankfurt am Main ; † March 30, 1851 ibid) was a Frankfurt mayor and senator. In 1822 he became Senior Mayor for the first time , elected head of state of the Free City of Frankfurt for one year . Guaita was the first Catholic to be elected to this office since the Reformation . He was re-elected six times by 1839.

life and work

The Guaita family came from the Menaggio area on Lake Como and had been trading bitter oranges in Frankfurt since 1660 . In the 18th century, the Guaitas gained citizenship.

Georg Friedrich Guaita was the son of the secret finance councilor Johann Baptist Guaita (1731–1783) and Maria Elisabeth Guaita born. Belli (1737-1806). He was married to Meline Brentano (1788–1861), a sister of Clemens and Bettine Brentano . His prosperity enabled him to run a prestigious house, in which numerous respected artists, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , frequented due to the relatives of his wife .

When the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt fell to the Prince-Primate Carl Theodor von Dalberg after the end of the Holy Roman Empire , that also meant the end of the patrician rule that had existed since the Middle Ages. For the few Frankfurt Catholics, it brought full civil equality.

Guaita was appointed to the city's Senate in 1807, where he became the spokesman for the Catholics. In 1812 Dalberg, now Grand Duke of Frankfurt , appointed him Prefectural Councilor . In 1813 he was raised to the nobility.

At the end of 1813, Frankfurt am Main regained its independence. Guaita was elected aldermen in 1817 and elected senior mayor of the Free City of Frankfurt for the first time in 1822 . He was re-elected in 1824, 1826, 1831, 1833, 1837 and 1839. The office of senior mayor was reassigned annually, although direct re-election was not permitted. The frequency with which Guaita was elected to this highest office of state therefore shows the high standing that Guaita enjoyed in the Senate.
