Georg Hermann Ritter von Mühlig (born November 6, 1826 in Zweibrücken , † November 9, 1907 in Istanbul ) was a German doctor .

Life

Georg Hermann Mühlig was born on November 6, 1826 as the son of the businessman Hermann Josef Mühlig and his wife Louise Catharina, b. Lang , born in Zweibrücken. Without the necessary permits, the family emigrated to Greece in 1830 . This was obviously well planned, because Hermann Josef Mühlig immediately found a job in the Greek Ministry of War . Due to the Greek Revolution , the family had to leave the country in early 1844 and went via Smyrna to Constantinople, where the father opened a wholesale business.

The son Georg Hermann returned to Germany in the autumn of the same year to study medicine in Heidelberg . In November 1847 he received his doctorate there. med. and went back to Constantinople, where he settled as a doctor. In 1857 Mühlig became a doctor for the German Evangelical Charity Association. In the same year he married Matilde Buskovich . The marriage resulted in three sons and two daughters. In 1860 Mühlig was awarded the title of ambassador doctor.

When a devastating cholera epidemic, which had been rampant since 1846, reached Constantinople in 1865 , Mühlig treated several thousand sick people every day and continued his normal work as chief physician of the German Hospital. He was called to the International Cholera Conference. For his fight against cholera he received high awards, including a. from Sweden , Russia , France and Turkey .

In the last third of the 19th century, Mühlig was consulted about all serious illnesses of the Sultan and his family. He was the Sultan's first consultant doctor, but always refused to take full Turkish service. In the years 1884, 1885 and 1892 Mühlig was honored by the Sultan for his services with high Turkish orders.

The close contacts Mühlig, who was still the German embassy doctor, with the Turkish ruling family, were also of political importance. As the then German ambassador, Prince Radolin , later confirmed, Dr. Mühlig both gaining important information from the Sultan's circle and bringing German concerns to the attention of the Sultan. Above all, this was the reason for the award of the Knight's Cross and the elevation to the nobility in 1893.

The eldest son Eduard became royal. Prussian major in Hanover , his second son Karl was the last imperial consul in Varna , the youngest son Friedrich became a doctor and professor in Constantinople. One of the two daughters, Adelaide , married the ambassador Ferdinand Freiherr von Nordenflycht , this is said to be the only line of the family that still exists today.
