Georg Leonhard Zili

Georg Leonhard Zili ; also Georg Leonhard Zyli (* 18th May 1774 in St. Gallen , † 25. September 1860 ) was a merchant and banker in St. Gallen.

Life

Georg Leonhard Zili was the eldest child of Hans Anton Zili (March 24, 1747; † February 10, 1811), a merchant, freight forwarder and, in 1770, community sergeant and his wife Maria Elisabeth (* June 8, 1749; † June 22, 1786), daughter by Jakob Zollikofer; he still had seven siblings. His grandfather was Caspar Zili (1717–1758), freight forwarder and founder of the Wegelin & Co banking house . In his second marriage, his father was married to Rosina (born October 20, 1751 in St. Gallen; † June 14, 1821 there), a daughter of Julius Hieronymus Zollikofer , mayor of St. Gallen.

From 1791 to 1793 he completed an apprenticeship as a merchant in Lyon and then joined the Zili family's linen cloth trade and forwarding business , which later became the Wegelin & Co. private bank, which he and his brother Caspar (* 1783; †) 1863) and Johann Caspar Schobinger, who married the widow of Caspar Zili, took over, so that he worked as a banker, merchant and freight forwarder. In 1799 he was interim chief paymaster of the Helvetian army .

Since 1820 he was a member and treasurer of Commercial Board (oldest Chamber of Commerce of Switzerland ).

From 1821 to 1822 he was judge's representative and from 1823 to 1839 judge of the district court in St. Gallen.

Georg Leonhard Zili was married to Susanna, daughter of Johannes Weber, pastor, since 1798.

Memberships

From 1819 on, as a member of the newly founded Natural Science Society, he developed a lively lecture activity.

In 1820 he became a member of the Swiss Charitable Society .
