Georg Süßmann (born January 1, 1928 in Łódź , Poland; † May 16, 2017 ) was a German physicist .

Career

Sussmann came to Lower Saxony with his German-speaking parents at the beginning of 1945 and began studying at the University of Göttingen two years later , with Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker and Werner Heisenberg , among others . He later moved to the Free University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1951 under Günther Ludwig . In 1957 he completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with Fritz Bopp (on the measuring process, treatises Bavarian Academy of Sciences 1958). He taught in Hamburg from 1958 to 1961 and from 1961 to 1968 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . In 1968 he became a professor at the University of Munich, where he retired in 1994.

In addition to theoretical physics (nuclear physics, quantum optics, cosmology such as questions of the physics of the arrow of time , basic questions of physical theories and especially quantum mechanics ) he also dealt with philosophical-theological questions. He was co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Naturforschung , the Reports on Mathematical Physics and the Areopag and International Journal of World Peace. With Erhard Scheibe he was also the editor of a commemorative publication for Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker.

Süßmann was a founding member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg.
