George Cadle Price (born January 15, 1919 in Belize City , † September 19, 2011 ibid) was the first Prime Minister of Belize and one of the most important people in the country's independence process.

Life

George Cadle Price was born into a large family with eight sisters and two brothers. He attended the Jesuit- run St. John's College High School in his hometown and was influenced by Catholic social teaching in his political thinking. He intended to become a priest and studied philosophy and theology in seminaries in the United States and Guatemala. He was a staunch Catholic all his life and attended Holy Mass every day, even when he was on state visits. When his father became seriously ill, he returned to make a living for the family. He worked as the secretary of the leading timber wholesaler in Belize City, which he accompanied on his business trips. He also wrote for a local newspaper, the Belize Billboard , published by his school friend Philip Goldson .

From 1944 he was involved in local politics. In 1947 he was elected to the city council. Three years later, on September 29, 1950, he was one of the founders of the People's United Party , which wanted Belize to achieve political and economic independence from the United Kingdom . In 1954 Price was elected to the colony's legislative council. Between 1956 and 1962 he was Mayor of Belize City, from 1961 First Minister. In this capacity he began negotiating with Great Britain for independence from Belize. Since 1964 Price was Prime Minister of British Honduras, which he renamed Belize in 1973.

In 1981 independence took place; Price was the country's first prime minister and was also the first government foreign minister. After losing the parliamentary elections in 1984, Manuel Esquivel replaced him . Price later served as Prime Minister for a second time from 1989 until he had to give up his post in 1993, again to Esquivel.

Honors

In September 2000, George Price became the first person to receive the Order of National Hero , Belize's highest honor, for his efforts to achieve Belize’s independence .
