George Elmer Pataki (* 24. June 1945 in Peekskill , New York ) is an American politician of the Republican Party and was from 1995 to 2007 Governor of the State of New York.

Early years and political advancement

Pataki has Hungarian , Irish and Italian ancestry. His family name comes from his grandfather János Pataki (1883–1971), who immigrated from Aranyosapáti to the USA in 1908 . He attended Yale University until 1967 and then studied law at Columbia Law School . After his admission to the bar, he began working in his new profession in his native Peekskill. He became a member of the Republican Party. Between 1981 and 1984 he was mayor of his home parish. Between 1985 and 1992 Pataki was a member of the New York State Assembly ; from 1993 to 1994 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1994 he was elected Governor of New York. He won with 48.8 percent of the vote against the long-time democratic incumbent Mario Cuomo (45.5 percent), whereby he was supported by the Conservative Party as in his two subsequent election victories . When he won, he benefited above all from the general political mood in 1994. The Republicans were also able to post strong gains in the congressional elections that were held at the same time.

Pataki took up his new office on January 1, 1995. After two safe re-elections in 1998 and 2002, he was able to exercise it until January 1, 2007. Over 600,000 new jobs were created in New York State during his first term. The governor promoted new technology and economic growth. There was a noticeable economic boom in his first two terms. Then came the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 : Since the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City took place in his state, Pataki was directly affected. He led the state through the time of sadness and sadness. In addition to the many victims and the material damage caused by the attacks, they also led to an economic crisis that affected the entire western world. Only gradually was it possible to overcome this.

Regardless of these tragic events around September 11, 2001, the governor campaigned for the preservation of the environment. Pataki wanted to reinstate the death penalty in his state in 1995 . That failed because of the objection of the Supreme Court of New York . However, he tightened criminal law at the state level. In 2006, George Pataki decided not to run again. He was succeeded by the Democrat Eliot Spitzer , who had held the office of Attorney General under Pataki since 1999 .

After his governorship, Pataki was first again a lawyer and then a delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations . In the last few years his name has been brought up again and again when it comes to higher state offices such as B. US Senator , US Vice President and even the presidency went. In the run-up to the 2012 presidential election , there were again rumors of Pataki's possible candidacy. In May 2015, he announced his candidacy for the 2016 presidential election . However, surveys gave him little chance of being nominated for his party. Most intra-party polls saw him with approval ratings of around one percent. On December 29, 2015, the former New York governor officially announced that he would be giving up his candidacy. Most recently, Pataki tried above all to raise his profile by criticizing the leading real estate billionaire Donald Trump , which received little media attention. Today George Pataki lives in Garrison with his wife Libby . The couple have four children.
