George Simonis

George Simonis (born November 17, 1885 in Craiova , † February 20, 1971 there ) was a Romanian composer and music teacher .

The son of the pianist and music teacher Gheorghe Simonis studied music theory, harmony and choral conducting with Dumitru Georgescu Kiriac , oboe with Rudolf Peters and bassoon with Dan Simionescu at the Bucharest Conservatory from 1903 to 1906 . He continued his education from 1911 to 1913 at the Paris Conservatory with Georges Caussade (counterpoint and fugue) and between 1910 and 1922 he took lessons from Vincent d'Indy in the subjects of counterpoint, fugue, composition and instrumentation at the Schola Cantorum .

From 1910 to 1911 he taught music at the national college in his hometown, and in the following two years Romanian at the Evangelical School. From 1924 to 1929 he directed an orchestral class at the Parisian Schola Cantorum. From 1929 to 1947 he was professor of music history, music aesthetics, acoustics and music education (1931–32 also rector) at the Cluj Conservatory. As a conductor, he has performed with the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Symphony Orchestras of Cluj, Deva, Craiova, the Bucharest Radio Symphony Orchestra and others. In 1919 he won second and in 1922 first prize at the George Enescu Composition Competition .
