Georges Skandar

Georges Skandar also Georges Scandar (born May 12, 1927 in Zahlé , Lebanon ; † May 15, 2018 ) was the first bishop of the Maronite eparchy of Zahlé .

Life

Georges Skandar was born in the predominantly Christian-Arabic city of Zahlé . He was ordained a priest on June 13, 1965 for the Maronite eparchy Baalbek-Deir El-Ahmar .

On August 4, 1977, Georges Skandar was by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Baalbek e Zahlé . The Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and the whole Orient , Anton Peter Cardinal Khoraiche , donated him episcopal consecration on November 12, 1977. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Aleppo , Joseph Salamé , and the Bishop of Sidon , Ibrahim Hélou .

On June 9, 1990, Pope John Paul II named Skandar the first bishop of the Zahlé eparchy, which was established on the same date . He headed the newly founded eparchy for twelve years, until his retirement on September 12, 2002 at the age of 75. John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
