history
The first inhabitants in the area of today's city were Mi'kmaqindians , who called the place Samcook (English: Sandy Shore ), ie "sandy beach". From 1534 the area was first populated by French immigrants. After some armed conflict, the area fell under British control in 1758 . Due to the favorable location on the Northumberland Road with a port facility, the place was chosen as the administrative seat of Kings County and in honor of the British King George III. now called Georgetown. For a long time the main livelihood of the residents was shipbuilding , in particular barges were made. Today the residents are also active in agriculture , administration , a sawmill , a seafood factory and tourism .
