Georgina Dufoix (birth name: Georgina Nègre ; born February 16, 1942 in Paris ) is a French politician of the Parti socialiste (PS), who was a member of the National Assembly (Assemblée nationale) , minister and state secretary. She was also President of the French Red Cross (Croix-Rouge française) between 1989 and 1992 and in 2013 publicly criticized the proposed law on same-sex marriage .

Life

State Secretary and Minister

Georgina Nègre was the daughter of the workshop owner Alain Nègre, who was also a member of the Nîmes City Council for the Section française de l'Internationale ouvrière (SFIO) , and Antoinette Pallier. She studied economics at the University of Paris , graduating with a Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées (DESS), and married the engineer Antoine Dufoix on September 20, 1963. After her father died in an accident in 1967, she took over the garage and was later also head of the branches of the rental company Avis in Nîmes, Arles and Alès . She began her political career for the Parti socialiste (PS) in local politics and was a member of the Nîmes city council between 1977 and 1989.

In the cabinets Mauroy Georgina Dufoix served between 22 May 1981 to 17 July 1984 as State Secretary for Family (Secrétaire d'Etat chargée de la Famille) . In the Fabius cabinet , she was Minister for Social Affairs and National Solidarity (Ministre des Affaires sociales et de la Solidarité nationale) from July 20, 1984 to March 21, 1986 . After leaving the government, she was elected for the first time in the parliamentary elections on March 16, 1986 for the PS as a member of the National Assembly (Assemblée nationale) and represented the Gard department from April 2, 1986 to May 14, 1988 .
