Gerd Spies

Gerd Spies (born around 1940) is a German historian ; from 1977 to 2003 he was director of the Städtisches Museum in Braunschweig .

Life

Spies was born in Swabia and completed his Abitur in Nürtingen, he studied in Stuttgart and at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tübingen . He completed his studies with a dissertation on the stove and the stove trade in southwest Germany . As early as 1961 he was working at the Ludwig Uhland Institute for German Classical Studies, Folklore and Dialect Research there and published an exhibition catalog. After completing his studies, he came to Braunschweig via Stuttgart, where he worked for the Municipal Museum. From 1977 until his retirement in 2003 he worked there as director. During this time he published numerous writings on Brunswick history . In 1996 there was a scandal because of an exhibition about the Nazi propaganda painter Paul Haehndel (1914–1941), which had to be closed again at the urging of the public. He was also an assessor and honorary advisory board member of the Braunschweigischer Geschichtsverein .
